Greek hospital workers call for more support in COVID-19 fight

Workers from Athens’ Evangelismos Hospital called for more support in dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak at a protest outside their workplace on Tuesday.

The protesters demanded more manpower, more equipment, and more virus testing in order to properly fight the outbreak. Police were called to disband the demonstration.

Similar demonstrations took place outside other medical institutions elsewhere in Greece, with the protests organized to coincide with World Health Day.

The government has announced 30 million euros (32 million dollars) in funding to clinics fighting COVID-19 and the hiring on short-term contracts of 4,000 doctors and nursing staff, as part of plans to deal with the outbreak, but the federation of hospital personnel says these measures are far from being enough to cope with the demand.

As of Monday, Greece has reported 1,755 confirmed coronavirus cases and 79 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
