The 13th international tourism exhibition and the 33rd national exhibition of handicrafts have been held in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Tour Operators, hotel owners, airlines, tourism foundations, travel agencies, as well as travel and tourism service providers from different countries have taken part in the event.

According to Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of Iran, some eight million foreign nationals have visited Iran since the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year despite US sanctions and a sharp decline in flights by some foreign airlines.

According to the latest statistics released by the United Nations World Tourism Organization, Iran was the third fastest growing tourism destination in the world in 2019, with 27.9 percent year-on-year growth.

Iran welcomed some 7.8 million foreign nationals last year, showing 52.5 percent year-on-year increase.

Under the 2025 Tourism Vision Plan, the country aims to increase the number of tourist arrivals from 4.8 million in 2014 to 20 million in 2025.

Iran ranks first globally in terms of the number of handicrafts cities and villages registered by the World Crafts Council. The number of Iranian crafts cities and villages stands at 14 while the second place goes to China, which has only 7 crafts cities and villages globally registered.
