A new opinion poll has shown that Senator Bernie Sanders continues to hold the lead over his opponents for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination in the US state of New Hampshire.

The CNN poll, conducted by the New Hampshire University on Sunday, found that support for Sanders had increased by three points from a January poll to 28 percent and the Vermont senator held a seven-point lead over his closest competitor, former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, with 21 percent.

Former Vice President Joe Biden ranked third in the poll with 12 percent of support, while Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren was in the fourth place at nine percent, a three-point decrease since January.

Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) registered at six percent, Representative Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) at five and tech entrepreneur Andrew Yang garnered only four percent of the votes, according to the CNN poll.

Sanders, who won New Hampshire in his 2016 primary race against Hillary Clinton, is now heading into the first-in-the-nation primary following his success in Iowa.

The CNN poll surveyed 384 likely Democratic primary voters between February 5 and February 8, with a margin of error plus or minus 5 percentage points.

Recent surveys have determined that Sanders enjoys more support among Hispanic voters and young people between 18 and 29 years old, demographics likely fueling his late-stage surge to the top of the Democratic field.

The 78-year-old would become America’s first Jewish president if elected. Nonetheless, he has called on the US government to withhold military aid to Israel if it continues to annex settlements in the occupied West Bank in Palestine.

Sanders’ rise to the top of the Democratic field has drawn attacks from Republican President Donald Trump, who calls the Vermont senator "crazy sanders."
