France in the Sahel

On Friday, hundreds of protesters staged a rally in the Malian capital, Bamako, to voice their anger at the French military presence in Africa’s Sahel region.

The demonstrators burned the French flag and chanted slogans against Paris in the city center.

The rally comes ahead of a summit in France, where officials from Sahel G-5 leaders including Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, and Chad will participate.

French military presence in Africa will be the top agenda in the meeting. Mali plunged into turmoil after a 2012 coup that enabled Tuareg separatists to seize towns and cities in the north.
