Chile: Protesters clash with police in renewed unrest
Protesters in the Chilean capital, Santiago, clashed with police in renewed unrest on Friday, as violent demonstrations continue over living standards and a host of other issues in one of Latin America's most unequal countries.
The protests, which have lasted for over a month, have been mostly peaceful, but Chilean President Sebastian Pinera has acknowledged the military has used excessive force to clamp down on particularly violent protesters.
According to the latest figures from Chile's National Institute of Human Rights, 2,808 civilians have been injured during demonstrations and at least 26 people people have been killed.
The protests began October 18 over a modest increase in subway fares, but have turned into a much larger and broader movement with a long list of demands including reforms to health care, education, pensions and even the constitution.
