Strong winds are fanning more than 100 fires on Australia's east coast on Tuesday, November 19, as Sydney is smothered by hazardous smoke and authorities warn of worsening air quality in the country's most populous city.

Aerial video from the Rural Fire Service in New South Wales showed flames threatening houses and smoke billowing across the landscape. Other videos on social media showed beaches and neighborhoods in Sydney and Central Coast blanketed with thick smoke.

Wildfires have claimed at least four lives so far in November and torched around 2.5 million acres (one million hectares) of farmland and bush in Australia, destroying more than 300 homes.

Officials said that the air quality above parts of Sydney was measured at 10 times hazardous levels on Tuesday, and advised people to stay indoors as much as possible as smoke lingers in the coming days.
