Protests continue in Chile as new death sparks anger
Clashes continued overnight in Santiago on Sunday, following the death of a 29-year-old man from a heart attack amid protests on Friday.
According to reports, police officers allegedly prevented paramedics from attending the victim, while firing tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannons.
Chile's human rights organisation said it would file a formal complaint for murder against police officers.
The man, who was named A. Acuna, later died at a nearby Santiago hospital, bringing the death toll during the now month-long protests to 23.
The current wave of demonstrations, considered to be the largest in decades, was sparked by a now-suspended metro fare hike. The demonstrations have since evolved into a movement with wider grievances against the rising costs of living, pension reform, and police conduct during demonstrations.
