India's Masjid, or Mosque controversy

India’s Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Hindus and passed them the ownership of the disputed religious site of Babri mosque in the northern town of Ayodhya. Also, the High Court ordered formation of a trust to construct a temple for Hindu Lord Ram in the site.

For the Muslims, however, an alternative land will be acquired. The verdict was delivered by a five-judge bench which was headed by the Indian Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. The verdict has been viewed as an end to the decades-long dispute over the land, as the site was claimed by both Hindus and Muslims.

Hindu Hardliners, including supporters of Modi's Hindu BJP, believe the site belonged to them as Lord Ram, the warrior god, was born there.

They believe on this site there was a temple, which was demolished and replaced with a mosque. But the Muslims say they prayed at the mosque for centuries; until 1949 when Hindus placed idols of Ram inside the mosque.
