Italy's historical city of Venice suffered one of the worst high tides of its history. Two people were reported dead on Thursday and the mayor declared the city a disaster zone. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has said a long delayed flood protection barrier system though to be able to prevented the high tides must be completed as soon as possible.

Floods across England have forced hundreds of people to leave their homes. More rain is forecast and some communities have been warned of danger to life and that some may be cut off by flood roads.

Parts of South Yorkshire received the equivalent of a month of rain in just one day last week. Lincolnshire was badly affected too and warnings are in place around Nottingham and Lincoln.

The government has been criticized for its slow response. On a visit to Stainforth Prime Minister Boris Johnson got a chilly reception.

The army has been deployed to Doncaster where 500 homes have been flooded and more than 1,000 properties evacuated in areas including the village of Fishlake. To add insult to injury, many of those affected have found out the insurance doesn’t cover flood damage.
