Exiled in Mexico: Bolivia's Morales receives keys to Mexico City
Exiled in Mexico, Bolivia's former President Evo Morales received the keys to Mexico City on Wednesday (November 13).
Morales resigned on Sunday (November 10) on the back of rising pressure over accusations of vote rigging in last month's election. But he has struck a defiant tone from Mexico where he is seeking asylum.
He told the event that his crime was being Bolivia's first indigenous president.
In 48 hours of turmoil in Bolivia during the weekend, mutinous police climbed on station buildings and joined marches, allies deserted Morales, the Washington-based Organisation of American States (OAS) declared his re-election was manipulated, and the military urged him to quit.
Morales accepted Mexico's offer for asylum and landed in the country on Tuesday (November 12).
