Damascus residents woke up to the sound of huge explosions in the early hours of Tuesday in what turned out to be an Israeli airstrike.

The Syrian army said Israeli fighter jets targeted a three-story building in the Mezzeh district with three missiles. One was intercepted but the other two hit the home of senior member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad resistance movement Jihad Akram al-Ajouri. He survived the attack but two people including his son were killed while ten others were injured.

The Israeli strike caused heavy damage to the nearby private property. Apartments and houses suffered significant damage. The Syrian government removed the rubble and cleaned the street where the Lebanese and other embassies are located. The Islamic Jihad vowed to respond strongly.

The attack comes a few days after Syrian president Bashar al-Assad said in a televised interview that Israel has direct links to terrorists in Syria and plays a role in any attack against the country.

This is not the first Israeli attack aimed at assassinating a resistance figure in Syria. In 2015, Israel assassinated Lebanese resistance figure Sameer al-Qintar. Israel attacked Syria thousands of times since the start of the crisis in 2011. Officials always say such attacks are in direct support of terrorists on the ground.
