It's fall and to many it's the harbinger of this red juicy fruit and the annual Festival of Pomegranate in Tehran has brought together pomegranate producers from across the country to put on display the variety of pomegranate products from juices to fruit leathers.

In the Iranian culture, pomegranate is called the fruit of heaven. Grape, olive, dates and figs are also known as Quranic fruits. The reason is they are mentioned in the holy Quran.

But that's not it; pomegranates are highly nutritious and have numerous health benefits.

Some three million tons of pomegranates are cultivated across the world annually. This year, Iran produced approximately 1mn tons of pomegranates.

Producing around one-third of the world's total pomegranate output, Iran is the biggest producer of pomegranate. This has granted the fruit a special position in Iran's culture with Iranians referring to it as the nature's ruby.

Pomegranate is an integral part of Iranian fruit basket. Aside from its nutritious values it is known as a symbol of abundance and bliss.

As the demand for pomegranate is high in Iran, the country exports a very small volume of its annual output to other countries. Organizers hope that through this event, authorities would take measures to increase pomegranate production to increase the exports of this tasty gift of nature to other countries.
