Lebanon's economic crisis deepens

Lebanese protesters rally in downtown Beirut on the third day of demonstrations against tax increases and official corruption, on October 20, 2019.

On Sunday evening, protesters in Lebanon took to the streets once again to voice their resentment over the adverse economic conditions and alleged government corruption.

Thousands demonstrated in the capital Beirut and the northern city of Tripoli which is Lebanon’s second biggest city. The rallies came after the resignation of four ministers from the Christian Lebanese Forces Party, a traditional ally of Prime Minister Sa’ad al-Hariri.

The political body announced that it was convinced that the government was unable to take the necessary steps to save the situation. The resignation followed a 72-hour ultimatum given by Hariri to his cabinet members to commit to a reform package. The ultimatum would end on Monday evening.
