A fake video showing US President Donald Trump shooting, assaulting and stabbing the media and his critics was played at a conference held for his supporters at his Miami resort last week, The New York Times reports.

The disturbing video was shown at Trump's resort National Doral Miami where Donald Trump Jr., former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) were all scheduled to speak during a three-day conference hosted by American Priority.

According to the Times, the video includes the logo for Trump's 2020 reelection campaign and shows a series of internet memes. Alex Phillips, the event's organizer, said the clip was part of a "meme exhibit."

In one part, Trump’s head is shown superimposed on the body of a man that is firing at people who have the faces of his critics or the logos of media organizations superimposed on bodies inside the “Church of Fake News."

Phillips, who told the Times that the clip had been played at the conference, condemned the video, saying his organization was investigating how it was played there.

“Content was submitted by third parties and was not associated with or endorsed by the conference in any official capacity,” Phillips said. “American Priority rejects all political violence and aims to promote a healthy dialogue about the preservation of free speech. This matter is under review.”

Meanwhile, the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) issued a statement on Sunday, denouncing the video.

“The WHCA is horrified by a video reportedly shown over the weekend at a political conference organized by the president’s supporters,” Jonathan Karl, president of the association, said in a statement.

“All Americans should condemn this depiction of violence directed toward journalists and the president’s political opponents,” he said.

“We have previously told the president his rhetoric could incite violence. Now we call on him and everybody associated with this conference to denounce this video and affirm that violence has no place in our society.”

Trump frequently attacks news coverage of his administration he considers unfavorable as "fake news."

He has regarded the Times and several other outlets as “the absolute enemy” of the American people.
