Turkey's incursion into Syria intensifies

Smoke billows from the Syrian border town of Ras al-Ain on October 12, 2019, as Turkey and its allies continued their assault on Kurdish-held border towns in northeastern Syria.

Turkey seems absolutely unwilling to end its military assault on northern Syria, at least for now. Despite growing criticism and warnings from around the world, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan struck a defiant tone on Friday insisting that the operation will not stop until its objectives are accomplished.

Turkey began the incursion this week to push Kurdish militants based in northern Syria away from border areas. Turkey refers to the Kurdish militants as terrorists and insists they should never come near its territory.
