Giniel de Villiers seals Morocco rally win for Toyota

Giniel de Villiers has won the Morocco Rally for a fourth time after holding off a late comeback from Carlos Sainz of Spain.

The South African saw his lead of 4 minutes, 47 seconds over Sainz whittled down to just 26 seconds in the last stage of the rally. However, less than 10km from the finish line, an engine problem crushed the Spaniard’s hopes and cleared the path for de Villiers to take the stage and the overall victory for Toyota.

Despite being classified a distant 12th in the 166 km stage, Sainz held on to second place in the overall standings after finishing 17 minutes 42 seconds down on de Villiers. Mathieu Serradori of Centuri Racing completed the overall podium spots while two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso finished 27th on his cross-country rally debut.
