Johnson’s rehashed Brexit deal to fail, opportunity for Trump
Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s rehashed Brexit deal, of previously rejected proposals, which will likely be dismissed by the EU, would appear to have been engineered in an effort to secure a trade deal with Trump.
Mr. Johnson submitted his final Brexit proposal to EU leaders, which includes a modified replacement to the Irish backstop, in prelude to his address to the British Parliament on Thursday.
He said his idea of replacing the Irish backstop with a new regime of checks represented a genuine compromise and had been heard with interest by EU leaders. The UK PM warned that if the EU fails to accept his final deal, he will allow a no-deal to go through.
However, EU Chief Negotiator for the Brexit, Michel Barnier, described Mr. Johnson’s proposal as a trap.
Barnier said that any reversion to a plan consisting of checkpoints at the Irish border would prevent Brussels from protecting its internal market.
Moreover, the Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister), Leo Varadkar, told the UK Prime Minister that the legal texts tabled “do not fully meet the agreed objectives of the backstop”.
This comes as Jean-Claude Juncker, the European Commission President, told the Prime Minister that there remained “problematic points” in his final proposal.
Boris Johnson is simply regurgitating remnants of Theresa May’s three failed deals. The outcome will meet the same fate, and Mr. Johnson wants it that way.
Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, called out Boris Johnson on his final proposal to the EU as a “Trump-deal Brexit”.
Under Trump, the UK would endanger regulatory standards and harm would befall the Northern Irish economy, Corbyn stated.
Trump understands that Britain either has to follow the European Union or it has to follow the United States.
The US President, Donald Trump, seeks to reverse Britain’s political and economic policies, particularly on the Iran Nuclear Deal, JCPOA, which the EU still supports.
This is why Boris Johnson’s policy would unravel into a straight mimic of US policy, or rather Trump policy.
