World Wrestling Championships: Iran's Geraei bags bronze

Team Iran have concluded their campaign in the Greco-Roman division in the 2019 World Wrestling Championships after grabbing two more bronze medals.

Mohammad Ali Geraei bagged bronze in the 77 kg category, after a neck and neck battle that saw him outlast Karapet Chalyan of Armenia 9-6.

The Iranian who had lost to Alex Kessidis of Sweden in the quarterfinals made it to the third place match after overcoming Daniel Cataraga of Moldova in the repechage round.

Tamas Lorincz of Hungary won gold with an 8-nothing victory over Kessidis.

That’s while, Alireza Nejati won bronze in the 60 kg category, after fighting back from a 5-nothing down to defeat Elmurat Tasmuradov of Uzbekistan 7-5.

The Iranian who was making his debut at the tournament, had suffered a 9-nothing loss against Kenichiro Fumita of Japan in the semifinals.

Fumita himself pocketed gold in this category following a 10-5 victory over Russia’s Sergey Emelin.

In the championship standing, Russia finished first with 132 points ahead of Uzbekistan and Georgia with 80 and 79 points respectively.

Iran who had also won a bronze in the 82 kg category through Saeid Abdevali finished fourth on 75 points.

The freestyle competitions will begin on September 20th.
