Scottish Liberal Democrats leader vows to stop indyref2

Willie Rennie and the Liberal Democrats are a marginal political force in Scotland

As the momentum for a Scottish independence referendum continues to grow, the Liberal Democrats have raised eyebrows by adopting a reactionary stance on the issue.

Talking to the BBC’s Sunday Politics Scotland programme from the Liberal Democrat Party Conference in Bournemouth, the party’s leader in Scotland, Willie Rennie, vowed to stop indyref2 “dead in its tracks”.

“We are against another independence referendum, so if you vote for us that’s what you get”, Rennie proclaimed.

Rennie’s over-confident manner is in keeping with party leader, Jo Swinson’s, increasingly boastful and unrealistic stances on stopping Brexit and opposition to a caretaker government led by Labour party leader, Jeremy Corbyn.

The Scottish Liberal Democrats’ leader’s position on a second referendum may be provocative but it is inconsequential owing to the Lib Dems’ marginal impact on Scottish politics.

The Scottish Liberal Democrats hold only 5 seats in the 129-seat Scottish parliament, also known as Holyrood. Similarly, the Lib Dems only hold 4 out of 59 Scottish constituency seats in the House of Commons.

Furthermore, the Liberal Democrats’ reactionary position on a new Scottish independence referendum stands in stark contrast to the latest opinion polls on the subject.

The BMG survey for the online newspaper, The Independent, published today, finds that 45 percent of respondents believe the government should allow a second independence referendum in Scotland.

The poll was comprised of a sample of 1,504 people in England, Wales and Scotland.
