A man has killed eight children and injured two others as they were walking to class on the first day of school in eastern China.

The man, 40 years old and surnamed Yu, attacked students at the Chaoyangpo Elementary School in Hubei Province’s Enshi City early Monday morning as children — aged 6 to 13 — were arriving for class.

“The local party committee and government is all out organizing rescue and remedial work,” the Enshi City government said in a statement.

The suspect is in custody and is being investigated.

It was not known what weapon had been used by the suspect, who according to local media, had been released from prison last June after serving a sentence for attempted murder.

While violent crimes are rare in China, attacks targeting children are not uncommon in the world’s most populous country.

Back in October, a woman attacked at least 14 children at a kindergarten in Chongqing in central China with a kitchen knife.

In another incident in China’s northwestern province of Shaanxi in April last year, a man stabbed nine students to death and inflicted injuries on 10 others.
