US President Donald Trump’s erratic rant on Wednesday at the White House, including his claim that he is “the chosen one," has renewed calls for him to be removed from office.

Trump’s questionable rhetoric as he spoke to reporters while preparing to depart the White House has prompted his critics to demand action from within Trump’s own administration, calling on Vice President Mike Pence and the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove the president from office.

Trump’s comments caused hashtags such as #25thAmendment and #25thAmendmentNow to trend on Twitter.

The 25th Amendment is a US constitutional provision by which the vice-president and Cabinet members can remove a president deemed unfit.

During his remarks on the south lawn of the White House, Trump claimed he is “the chosen one" to confront China on trade, a title often used to refer to religious figures in Christianity and Judaism.

The Republican president also called the Danish prime minister “nasty” for rejecting his proposal to sell Greenland to the United States and warned American Jews not to vote for a Democrat at next year’s presidential election.

Trump on Tuesday called off a visit to Denmark scheduled for early September after Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rebuffed his idea of purchasing Greenland.

Frederiksen said on Sunday the idea of selling Greenland to the United States was absurd after an economic adviser to Trump confirmed US interest in buying the world’s largest island.

After the news conference, the hashtag #25thAmendmentNow was the top trending item on Twitter.
