Over tennis news, Canada’s Denis Shapovalov has reached the round of 16 at the Winston-Salem Open following a straight sets win over American Tennys Sandgren.
Shapovalov looked sharp on his way to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sandgren, who was coming off a 1st-round victory over 3-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray.
Sandgren fought back from a 3-love down in the 2nd set to lead by a break at 4-3 before the Canadian came through with a break in the final game to seal the victory. Awaiting Shapovalov in the next round is Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic.
Meanwhile, Benoit Paire of France overcame India’s Prajnesh Gunneswaran 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the round of 16 at the Winston-Salem Open on Tuesday. the Frenchman who had lost his only previous meeting with Gunneswaran, was clearly frustrated by his early play - smashing his racquet after being broken in the seventh game.
But he broke back immediately and pushed on to take the opening set 6-3, before a late break saw him take the second set for victory with a timely ace. Paire will next play fellow countryman Ugo Humbert.
