South Korea promotes peace economy with North Korea

Leaders of South Korea’s political, business and civil society communities gathered to launch a new forum to promote inter-Korean economic development.

South Korea has sought to bring North Korea out of its isolation and create what President Moon Jae-in has termed a peace economy. Seoul’s Unification Minister echoed those sentiments Tuesday.

US-led sanctions against North Korea over its nuclear program have obstructed inter-Korean relations. Seoul has sought to implement what engagement it could mostly cultural and sports exchanges. Robust economic cooperation is advocated by many.

Meanwhile North Korea again this week criticized the South over its military drills with the US even as reports suggest the US and North Korea will sit down for talks on denuclearization and sanctions relief this fall.

North Korea’s mineral resources are often estimated at upwards of $10 trillion dollars.

But to tap into that potential production bonanza, relations between Pyongyang and the international community and in particular, the United States must change, sanctions must be ended and North Korea integrated into the global economy.
