Tensions escalate between Pakistan and India after groups of soldiers from both sides were killed at the disputed border of Jammu and Kashmir.

A heavy exchange of intermittent fire has begun between militaries of the two nuclear armed nations for the first time since India revoked the special constitutional status of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir and annexed the disputed territory into its federation. Islamabad says five Indian and three Pakistani soldiers were killed. New Delhi, however, denies fatalities of its soldiers.

Pakistan’s military accused India of deliberately escalating border tension to divert international attention from atrocities being committed against civilians in the Indian disputed Kashmir region.

The disputed territory has been under curfew, with all kind of communication links like internet and phone services suspended since early last week. The clampdown followed after New Delhi scrapped the special status of Jammu and Kashmir by lifting the ban on Indian citizens to purchase properties – an illegal act under numerous UN Security Council resolutions, which also call for referendum to determine the future of the Muslim majority region of Kashmir.

In Pakistan, there is no letup to the protests against India, with demonstrators voicing solidarity with the Kashmiri people.

India and Pakistan trade barbs over Kashmir as tension continues. Islamabad says the time has come to teach New Delhi a lesson. India accuses its neighbor of helping militants to infiltrate into the disputed Kashmir region.
