Thursday, August 15, 2019, will be remembered as a momentous day for the UK and Iranian relations. It was the date when the Gibraltar Supreme Court was set to decide on whether to release the Grace 1 crude oil tanker or extend its controversial detention. Speaking to those outside the courthouse, it seemed obvious which option they preferred.
However, despite mounting speculation that the oil tanker would be released following the exchange of documents between Gibraltar authorities and Iranian officials, there was a huge revelation that the US Department of Justice had put in a special request to seize the tanker which was carrying the Iranian oil based on unspecified allegations.
The court adjourned for a few hours only to eventually decide to defy the US's unilateral request and release the oil tanker with immediate effect.
