John Bolton is in London to reassure Britain if it crashes out of the EU without a deal, Washington will be waiting with open arms on the other side.

Of course, there is a catch, well two really. The Trump administration wants London to throw its full weight behind the US policy of maximum pressure on Iran, and for the British market to surrender to US merchandise post-Brexit. Although the UK cannot officially enter trade talks before Brexit actually happens, the US hopes number 10 might make a few concessions to mitigate fears regarding a no-deal scenario.

Bolton says the US will focus on striking bilateral trade deals in certain sectors like manufacturing and car-making and work out more complicated areas later. Washington has its eye on the UK’s healthcare system too, to the chagrin of many.

But does John Bolton have the full backing of his president when it comes to Iran? Officials have spoken out about their relationship. Apparently Trump likes to tease his national security adviser about his lust for military action in front of top officials and foreign dignitaries.

And there can be no doubt what Bolton is thirsting for now; a man who believes the relationship between America and the rest of the world should resemble that between a hammer and a nail.

Some say Trump likes to play good cop to Bolton’s bad, but on this occasion he has not reigned in his guy as vessels from the US, Europe and Israel advance on the Persian Gulf.
