Pakistan has witnessed almost daily protests after India ended the autonomous status of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region on Tuesday. The move, which violates the UN Security Council resolutions on Kashmiris’ right to self-determination, has outraged people in Pakistan.
On Friday, thousands of protesters braved harsh weather conditions in Islamabad to stage another demonstration to condemn India’s move. The protest came in time with similar action around the country.
The disputed Jammu and Kashmir region has turned to the biggest open-air prison in the world after India deployed nearly 900,000 military and paramilitary troops to enforce strict curfew to compel 14 million people to stay indoors with no internet connection or any other communication link with the outside world. Any one violating the curfew would be shot dead by the security forces.
The public outrage in Pakistan has been reflected in Islamabad’s response to New Delhi’s decision on Kashmir. The Pakistani government has suspended cultural and trade ties with India and has expelled the Indian ambassador.
Amid the tensions, a Pakistani federal minister has even called for war with India to decide the fate of Kashmir, which is claimed by both Pakistan and India in its entirety.
On Friday, Pakistan’s military also warned India that any misadventure in Kashmir will be retaliated with a response even stronger than that of February 27, when Pakistan shot down two intruding Indian fighter jets. The United Nations has called for restraint on both sides of the border.
