A Gazan artist is using her unique style of drawing as a way to ease her psychological stress.

The Gaza Strip lives a tragic case that affects all segments of society. Life is more likely a challenge for everyone, but despite the deterioration of life conditions and the psychological pressure, there is still a great deal of creativity and inspiration can be seen among Gazans’ daily activities.

Twenty-one-year-old artist Leen alhaj has a distinguished talent of drawing beautiful paintings on grape leaves. Leen, who is studying psychology at the Islamic University of Gaza, considers this talent a way to overcome depression, pressure and the psychological stress surrounding her.

Observing the leaves in her house was the inspiration that led Leen to discover this talent. She thinks that grape leaves are the best way to embody the Palestinian culture and traditions. Leen imitates natural views through her paintings like skies full of stars, waterfalls, the sunset, trees and other natural views that touch her soul. Her art is not only a way to overcome stress, but also a reflection of what she wishes to see and feel.

The Gaza Strip is witnessing high rates of depression and mental disorders due to the worsening conditions as a result of the Israeli siege since 2007. Leen considers her paintings a means by which she faces the Israeli occupation.

Despite all the fear and terror, and lack of opportunities in the Gaza Strip, youths like Leen consider their art a psychological therapy and a way to escape from the desperate circumstances they live in.
