At least 8 people have been killed as two strong earthquakes hours apart struck a group of sparsely populated islands in the Luzon Strait in the northern Philippines.
As many as 60 people are thought to have been injured. The Philippine seismology agency said the quakes measured 5.4 and 5.9. A third quake magnitude 5.7 struck later Saturday.
A damage assessment team was about to be deployed when the second temblor struck and they were diverted to helping residents, according to an official. Volunteers and rescue workers are reportedly still digging through rubble of collapsed buildings in hopes of finding survivors.
