Hong Kong: Civilians 'attacked by gangsters' says lawmaker about train attack
"Hundreds of civilians [were] totally attacked by the gangsters with weapons," said Democratic Party lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting during a press conference held by the Legislative Council in Hong Kong on Monday. The comment came following the assault that took place inside the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MTR) station of Yuen Long on Sunday, where dozens of masked men attacked commuters and anti-government protesters, according to footage taken by commuters and posted on social media.
Lam Cheuk-ting showed his injured arm and a cut by his mouth, while his assistant revealed scars on the back of his neck.
The lawmaker criticised the inaction of the police force in regards to the assault and said that they are starting "a new chapter of shame."
Lam Cheuk-ting stated that the men "indiscriminately [attacked] all the people in the train." He added that he believes that a powerful person or organisations, "maybe in [the] political area," are behind the assault.
Men dressed in white T-shirts and armed with poles broke into the Yuen Long station on Sunday, where they reportedly stormed a train and attacked passengers that included people returning from an anti-government protest.
Forty-five people were reportedly injured, one of which in a critical condition.
Police said early on Monday they had not arrested anyone at the station or during a subsequent search of a nearby village but that investigations were still ongoing.
The Democratic Party is now conducting an investigation on the attack.
The incident comes after thousands hit the streets of Hong Kong on Sunday, to protest against the now-suspended extradition bill and demanded the resignation of Chief Executive Carrie Lam.
