US favors military intervention in Latin America, elsewhere: Analyst

Political commentator Don DeBar

US policy is mostly “dominated” by people who have traditionally favored military intervention in Latin America and other nations, says a political commentator.

Don DeBar made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Saturday when asked about Venezuelan Ambassador to the United Nations Samuel Moncada who has accused the United States of pushing for military intervention in the Latin American country by undermining ongoing negotiations between Caracas and the opposition.

Venezuela plunged into political crisis in January, when the US-backed opposition figure Juan Guaido — who heads Venezuela’s now defunct National Assembly — abruptly proclaimed himself “interim president.” The elected government of Maduro rejected that self-proclamation. It has nevertheless been negotiating with Guaido’s representatives to resolve the political crisis in the country.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has levied several rounds of sanctions against Venezuela to oust Maduro and replace him with Guaido.

DeBar said that the US, whose first attempt at regime change in Venezuela failed, is now seeking to achieve its goal through a military intervention in the country.

“It seems that Washington after trying the most ridiculous style attempt at regime change perhaps in history with just some guy deciding to proclaim themselves president and then the US saying we recognize them but that failed they seem really committed to trying to accomplish regime change and I guess they realize the only way they are going to accomplish regime change in the near future is with the military intervention.”

“The policy, at least the visible part of policy, seems to be dominated by a group of people who traditionally have been in favor of military intervention in Latin America and elsewhere,” he added.

In his press conference at the UN headquarters in New York on Friday, Moncada said the United States was trying to impose a "violent solution" on Venezuela.

"They are trying to tell the world that they are in charge of this dialogue process, that they do not agree with the dialogue process, that the dialogue process is bound to fail and that the only solution to the situation in Venezuela is foreign military intervention," he added.
