A powerful gas explosion ripped through a shopping mall in the US state of Florida on Saturday, causing multiple injuries, authorities said.

Photos on US news outlets showed a large field of debris outside the Fountains Plaza shopping center in the city of Plantation in southern Florida.

The blast sent large pieces of debris about 100 yards (about 91 meters) across the street.

The Sun-Sentinel newspaper reported that witnesses said a vacant restaurant appeared to be the source of the explosion.

The Plantation Fire Department said it was a gas explosion, and it reported "multiple patients."

Local TV station WPLG said around 20 people were injured, two of them seriously.

Video posted to Twitter showed the force of the blast scattered debris across a parking lot and blew out several windows at a nearby gym, sending patrons running for the exits.

Plantation is about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Miami.
