Mothers rally in Hong Kong to support younger protesters

Thousands of mothers have staged a rally in Hong Kong against an extradition law that was previously proposed but has now been suspended.

The disputed law proposed by the local government has been the centerpiece of protests in the past weeks.

Mothers and elderly women observed a minute of silence and held banners with messages to support those opposed to the extradition bill at a park in Hong Kong’s central district on Friday night.

The rally also included people who were not parents but said they wanted to support the young protesters who had rallied in the past weeks.

The gathering was the first since a violent protest on July 1, when protesters stormed Hong Kong’s Legislative Council, vandalizing it.

There were six hours of intense standoff between angry protesters and riot police.

A former British colony, Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997. However, the region still maintains a level of autonomy, including an independent legal system.

Britain warned China earlier this week of “serious consequences” if it breached the handover agreement, which includes the provision about the region’s semi-autonomous status.

Beijing has cautioned against foreign interference in its internal affairs.
