Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says three Syrian citizens have lost their lives in a car bomb explosion in southeast Turkey, near the border with Syria, adding that the attack may be terroristic.

The bombing occurred in the town of Reyhanli, home to thousands of Syrian refugees, on Friday, Erdogan said, adding that investigations were underway to determine who was behind the incident.

“The initial findings suggest there may be more of a link with terror,” Erdogan told reporters in Istanbul. “It is clear there was a bomb in the car.”

Security sources said the blast occurred when an explosive device that was in possession of one of the Syrian passengers in the car went off prematurely.

According to the sources, the attack also left one person injured. They said that the passengers in the car were being investigated for potential links to the Daesh terrorist group.

Turkey hosts about 3.5 million Syrian refugees.

In the first years since the Syrian conflict began in 2011, Turkey was the main point of entry for foreign militants seeking to join foreign-backed militant groups. Ankara later tightened border controls and began widespread arrests and extraditions, especially after a spate of devastating Daesh assaults in Turkey.
