Russian armed forces in the Central Military District were put on high alert on Monday (June 24) after Vladimir Putin, Russia's President and Supreme Commander-in-Chief, announced drills to test their combat readiness.

Iskander, S-300 and S-400 missile systems, Btr-82 Armoured Personnel Carriers were seen demonstrating their fighting capabilities and combat readiness on the video footage released on Monday by the Russian Defense Ministry.

Military exercises were intended to ensure military security in Central Asian region and to prevent terrorist threats, Russian Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu said.

About 150,000 troops and more than 20,000 weapons were involved in the surprise combat readiness inspection of the Russian Army.

Military exercises will continue until Friday (June 28).
