Iran and the unreliability of the US

Less than 20 days left before the end of Iran’s deadline, Japanese Prime Minister and German Foreign Minister visited Iran.

Japanese Prime Minister Abe and German Foreign Minister Maas visited Iran for two interrelated purposes. Abe carried a message from the US president Trump which was an invitation for negotiation; however, Iranian Leader strongly said that Iran would not repeat the big mistake of negotiation with the US especially with the current administration.

Iran holds that the US president must return to the JCPOA and fulfill its commitments under the deal before anything. On the other hand, Maas came to convince Iran to refrain from leaving the JCPOA arguing that INSTEX would become up and running soon.

Japanese Premier Abe arrived in Tehran Wednesday 12th June, to discuss economic relations with Iran, and to deliver US President Trump’s message to Iranian Leader Khamenei. The leader’s stance is understandable, because Iran and the US had a lot more than talks between them. They had the JCPOA. The US binned that deal, and is now asking to talk.

Another recent visit to Iran was by Haiko Maas the German Foreign Minister. After all, of the 60-day deadline Iran granted its remaining partners to the JCPOA, only a third is left, and the countdown is ticking away fast. Iran sees no sense in staying in a deal unilaterally; for that would be no deal. It will not immediately pull out. But it will scale down its commitments one step at a time. Let’s say Iran sits down to talks with the US and gives them further concessions yet.

Truly, the deal-breaker may well back out yet again, as Iranian heads suspect. Pro-Israel Congress members may yet impose further sanctions on Iran. What if the next US president decides not to abide by a deal struck by his or her predecessor? It’s wouldn’t be a first! What if Donald Trump himself is re-elected in 2020, in all his unreliability? Once in office, he will see no need for the Iran Deal or JCPOA. His present pre-occupation with Iran, appears to be not much more than an election stunt.
