China ready to join India for closer development partnership

Chinese President Xi Jinping (R) and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Chinese President Xi Jinping says his country is ready to join India in forging a closer development partnership between the two sides.

Xi made the remarks on Thursday during his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the 19th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek.

The Chinese president noted that Beijing and New Delhi are the world's only two emerging economies that boast a population of more than one billion respectively, and are both at a crucial stage of rapid development.

The Chinese leader said bilateral cooperation will also contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in Asia and the entire world.

He added that since their last year's meeting in China, they have led their ties onto a new stage, expressing Beijing's willingness to join India to make continuous efforts in building a closer development partnership.

Xi urged the two sides to properly handle their differences so as to turn their ties into a positive factor in their respective development.

The Chinese president went on to say that China and India need to cooperate in such areas as investment, industrial capacity and tourism, jointly promote regional inter-connectivity, including the construction of the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor.

He also called on the two sides to boost trust-building measures in order to preserve stability in their common borders.

Referring to the two countries as important representatives of developing nations and emerging market economies, said Xi Beijing and New Delhi need to jointly safeguard free trade and multilateralism, and protect the rights of developing countries.

Modi, for his part, said India is ready to cooperate with China to enhance high-level exchanges and bolster strategic communication.

The Indian prime minister called on the two sides to promote bilateral relations in diverse areas, explore new avenues for cooperation, and properly handle their disputes.
