Self-sufficiency in petrol production

Persian Gulf Star Refinery, also known as Bandar Abbas Gas Condensate Refinery, is a new gas condensate refinery near Bandar Abbas, Iran.

Iran’s launch of the Persian Gulf Star refinery raised Iran’s refinery’s output to 45 liters of Euro 5 petrol daily.

The Persian Gulf Star construction began 13 years ago but with having completed its 3rd phase and going onto a 4th phase, it has taken its work to a whole new level. The refinery gets its daily feed via a 485-km pipeline from South Pars Gas Field, has created at least 600 jobs.

Euro-quality petrol is not the only factor. The Persian Gulf Star is at present producing not only 37 million litres of Petrol daily, but also 14 million litres of gasoline, and 3 million litres of jet fuel and 4 million litres of LPG, liquefied petroleum gas. It’s also to produce Hydrogen and Sulfur.

Iran’s production of Euro 5 petrol was first produced in Imam Khomeini Oil Refining Company of Shazand in 2011. After Shazand, the production of Euro 5 petrol began in Isfahan and then Tabriz and finally the Persian Gulf Star. Today, only some small refineries are producing low quality petrol such as in Kerman and partly in Abadan and that’s because those refineries did not have the capacity to be upgraded.

It also merits attention that fuel price in Iran is the second lowest in the world and that explains why heavily-subsidized fuel, would mean excess fuel consumption. Even rendering subsidies goal-oriented, didn’t help. Perhaps relative leveling of prices with the Persian Gulf FOB, will help reduce consumption.

A bus or a trailer truck conductor who buys petrol for around 8 cents (1 thousand Iranian tomans) and smuggles it to a neighboring country, like Turkey for example, he does not sell it at the global price; he does not sell it 1.23 cents; he actually sells it 60 cents or 70 cents. This is while the Iranian government has spent way more than 8 cents to produce that petrol; around 20 cents. And this means that the Iranian government is giving subsidy to the Turkish government or the governments of Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Arab countries of the south.
