Here is a brief look at Press TV newsroom's headlines from 1800 GMT, May 23, 2019 to 0800 GMT, May 24, 2019.

‘Iran will defeat US’

Iran’s president Hassan Rouhani says the Iranian nation will defeat its enemies in the region and beyond through resistance and unity. Rouhani warned that the enemy will regret its economic war against Tehran. He said Washington’s stepped-up pressure campaign against Iran is aimed at its sovereignty and independence, but Iranians will defeat such measures. Rouhani underlined that independence and integrity are Iranians’ non-negotiable red lines. The remarks come at a time when Washington has maximized its pressure against Iran through economic sanctions. It has also intensified its military presence in the Middle East, citing threats from Iranian-backed forces in the region. The moves have fueled tensions between Tehran and Washington, raising fears of a military conflict.

Sudan political deadlock

In Sudan’s capital, medics have rallied in support of protests against the military council that took over after fall of the country’s long-time ruler. The doctors gathered in front of a hospital in Khartoum, chanting “civil rule is the people’s decision”. The protesters said they were ready to go on strike. The demonstration comes after the failure of negotiations between the protest movement and the military council. Sudan’s former ruler, Omar al-Bashir, was ousted last month after a wave of nationwide protests.

Missouri tornados

At least seven people have been killed as devastating tornadoes swept through the central United States. In Jefferson City in the state of Missouri, a massive twister caused widespread damage to buildings, trees, cars and power lines, leaving thousands of people without electricity. The full extent and cost of the damage is not immediately clear. Officials say at least 20 people were treated at hospitals for injuries. Rescue workers are checking door-to-door for survivors. The weather service predicted strong storms will continue through the weekend in Missouri.

US Mideast presence

The US president says he does not think additional US troops are needed in the Middle East to counter Iran. Donald Trump spoke shortly before being briefed by acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan on a new deployment plan. This is while Shanahan earlier said the Pentagon is considering sending additional troops to the Middle East as one of the ways to reinforce American positions in the region. Tensions have been running high between Tehran and Washington since the US withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal last year.

Trump’s ‘impeachable’ actions

The US House Speaker says President Donald Trump’s actions are impeachable, but warned that such a course of action would be very divisive. Pelosi said Democrats are not at place to impeach Trump yet. She noted Trump himself is disappointed that the Democrats have not launched formal steps to remove him from office. She argued that the president’s impeachment could fire up his conservative base and help his re-election bid. Pelosi suggested that the Democrats should instead get the facts to American people through investigation of what she calls Trump’s cover-up.

Yemen retaliatory attacks

Yemen's Ansarullah says its release of the footage of last year’s drone attack on the Abu Dhabi International Airport exposes lies by Emirati authorities who had denied the attack. Chief negotiator of the movement, Mohammed Abdul-Salam says the UAE should immediately acknowledge an attack the next time it happens. This comes after the Yemeni movement released footage showing a drone strike on Terminal 1 of the Abu-Dhabi international airport last year. Meanwhile, Yemeni forces have conducted another retaliatory attack on Saudi targets. They have launched a drone strike on a Patriot missile battery at an airport in the Saudi Najran province. It’s the third time that the airport has been targeted. Yemeni forces warn they have a hit list of 300 targets in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which they can strike in retaliation to the ongoing war on Yemen.

US Saudi arms sales

A democratic senator warns that the US President plans to bypass Congress to approve a major arms sale to Saudi Arabia. Chris Murphy says Donald Trump plans to use a loophole and tensions with Iran to sell bombs to Saudi Arabia. The senator says Trump wants to use his emergency powers in a way that would prevent Congress from objecting. Murphy says there is no new emergency in the region apart from the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, which he says was caused by arms sales to Riyadh. Congress has blocked part of arms sales to Saudi Arabia over civilian casualties in the Saudi war on Yemen. President Trump says arms sales to the Saudis generate jobs back home.

Brexit impasse

British Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to announce the date of her resignation on Friday. Senior cabinet ministers say they expect May to give a timetable for her successor to be chosen later in the day. May, however, will remain in office during the Conservative Party’s election that will start on June 10 and last for six weeks. The premier’s planned resignation comes amid differences with lawmakers over her negotiated Brexit deal with the European Union. The Conservatives and the Labour have both said they would not support May’s modified deal that contains new proposals. Lawmakers have already rejected her agreement three times, making the UK delay its departure until October.
