The self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) marked the fifth anniversary of its independence from Ukraine on Saturday (May 11) with a mass parade in the city center.

The Kremlin has repeatedly denied providing military support for separatists who rejected a new pro-Western leadership in Kiev in 2014 and set up two states in eastern Ukraine, where many people identify as ethnically Russian.

The conflict in Ukraine's east has killed around 13,000 people since 2014 and poisoned relations between Ukraine and Russia.
