Barcelona Open: Nadal battles back to beat Mayer

Spain's Rafael Nadal returns the ball against Argentina's Leonardo Mayer during a men's singles match at the Barcelona Open Tennis Tournament in Barcelona, Spain, Wednesday, April 24, 2019.

World number 2 Rafael Nadal has advanced to the last 16 of the Barcelona Open, recovering from a set down to beat Argentine Leonardo Mayer 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.

The Spaniard, who was coming off a semi final defeat on Monte Carlo clay, surrendered a 5-3 lead in the 1st set on Wednesday. He then spurned 2 set points in the tiebreak, which world number 63 Mayer edged.

This was the 1st time Nadal had dropped a set in the tournament in 4 years. However, the King of Clay bounced back immediately by breaking his opponent in the 2nd set opener and breaking him twice more in the decider.

Nadal has now set up an all-Spanish 3rd round tie with David Ferrer, who eased past Lucas Pouille of France 6-3, 6-1.
