UK Conservatives expect PM May to resign by end of June: Report
Head of the committee supervising Britain’s ruling Conservative Party is reportedly seeking Prime Minister Theresa May’s removal as head of the government in the next two months, a new report has revealed.
The Sunday Times said Graham Brady, who chairs the 1922 Committee of Tory backbench lawmakers, will ask May in the coming week that she must step down by the end of June or lawmakers will try to oust her.
The call comes amid May’s repeated failure in securing Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union, an issue her critics believe has deeply damaged the reputation of the Conservative Party and helped the opposition Labour and anti-EU parties surge in recent opinion polls.
Members of the 1922 Committee launched a bid to unseat May in December but failed. Current rules say that the lawmakers cannot table a fresh bid to oust the leader of the party until a year has passed. However, the Times said without citing sources, that Brady will tell May that rules could change so that members of the parliament would be enabled to sack her from the party’s leadership.
The report said May will be told that some 70 percent of Tory members of the parliament were demanding her removal from premiership.
May has steered Britain through nearly three years of divorce negotiations with the EU although she has failed to go through the parliament with a Brexit deal that she reached with the block in November.
The failure to leave the EU, first at the end of March and then on a second departure date on April 12, caused Brussels to grant Britain a long delay to Brexit until the end of October.
