Moussavi appointed as Iran’s new Foreign Ministry spokesman

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has appointed Abbas Moussavi as the ministry’s new spokesperson.

Moussavi will be the 11th spokesman for the ministry since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

He is a graduate of the School of International Relations run by the Foreign Ministry. He holds a master’s degree in international relations.

Moussavi has been serving as the director general of the Department of Information and the Press Affairs of the Foreign Ministry.

He had also served as the first secretary and head of the Iranian representative office in Hong Kong as well as economic attaché in the Iranian embassy in the Netherlands.

Moussavi replaces Bahram Qassemi who held the position since June 2016 and has been appointed as Iran’s new ambassador to Paris.

Qassemi has served as Iranian ambassador to Ireland, Italy and Spain, the head of Foreign Ministry’s Commonwealth Department, the director general for the Foreign Ministry's Western Europe Department and the deputy head for international studies at the Center for Strategic Research, which is affiliated with Iran's Expediency Council.

In another decree on Saturday, Zarif appointed Hossein Jaberi Ansari as Iran's deputy foreign minister for consular, parliamentary, and expatriates’ affairs.

Jaberi Ansari has served as senior assistant to the Iranian foreign minister on special political affairs as well as the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson.

Zarif also issued another decree on Saturday, appointing Ali Asghar Khaji as his senior assistant on special political affairs.

Khaji has served as deputy foreign minister for European and American affairs, Foreign Ministry's director general for the Persian Gulf affairs and the Islamic Republic's ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Belgium and China.
