"I lived under a military dictatorship in the 60s and I know what misery is. Lula took the people out of misery, Lula gave education and housing to everyone," said Lucia, a protester.

Lula was imprisoned over charges of corruption and money laundering.

Lula denied all charges against him, claiming they are politically motivated and designed to stop him running for president. He led Brazil between 2003 and 2010.
