Six UK soldiers sexually abuse sleeping female comrade
Six UK soldiers have reportedly been arrested and then released as part of an investigation into the serious sexual abuse of a teenage servicewoman in a military barrack.
The Sun newspaper said in a Saturday report that the six men, reportedly drunk, had circled the 17-year-old female soldier and carried out a “sex attack” on her.
The widely-circulating newspaper said it knows the name of the army unit where the crime took place but it did not name it due to legal reasons.
The UK military has opened an official probe, saying five suspects had been arrested on Friday last week and another one three days later. All suspects, one of them a Staff Sergeant, have been released while the probe continues.
The victim has told the army commanders that the men were standing over her when she woke up. She is being offered support and counseling, the Sun said.
An army insider described the attack as totally unprecedented, saying the British army has never seen something of the like.
“This is the most vile and rancid incident. No one has ever heard of anything so sickening,” said the source.
UK defense minister Gavin Williamson said he was “horrified” by the incident, while promising a wider review into “inappropriate behavior” in the UK military.
The army probe comes days after authorities said they were investigating a video showing soldiers stationed in Afghanistan using a picture of opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn as their target.
The attack on the teenage servicewoman also comes amid reports the UK army is having huge difficulty attracting the youth to join its ranks.
Many blame the serious understaffing on difficult situation in UK army barracks as well as the bad reputation of the military in getting involved in bloody and costly invasions around the world.
