President Donald Trump is moving the United States into direct collision with many of its allies and with the people of the Middle East region, an independent political analyst and political activist says.

Mick Napier, member of the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, told Press TV in an interview on Tuesday while commenting on formal US recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Syrian territory Golan Heights.

Breaking with decades of international consensus, Trump on Monday formally recognized Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, a border area the Tel Aviv regime seized from Syria in 1967. During the signing event, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Trump's Jewish son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner were standing at his side in the White House in Washington, DC.

“This was a long time in the making. Should have taken place decades ago,” Trump said. And then Trump handed the pen that he used for his signature to Netanyahu, and said, "Give this to the people of Israel."

“It must be sop to his financiers because although he initially – in his election campaign – was very critical of Israel and aid to Israel he made an about-turn and opened up financing from very wealthy billionaires who are very pro-Israel. So I think that’s the part of explanation,” Napier said.

“On another level of course Britain gave Palestine to European colonization just over a hundred years ago. So Trump is maintaining this tradition of believing that imperial power, military power that gives the Empire right to move pieces of land on a chessboard, of course, with no concerns of the feelings of a great majority of people, because actually the Druze Syrian people who live in Golan give their loyalty to the Syrian state and have tried very, very hard indeed to prevent Israel from encroaching upon their freedoms,” he stated.

“So I think Trump is really moving America into direct collision with many of its allies, and, of course, with the people of the region,” the analyst said.

“It’s shocking decision and completely counter to the legal system that was adopted after 1945 which was very clear in the aftermath of WWII that land acquired by military conquest could not be maintained,” he noted.

“So Trump is threatening to upset the entire legal system that was adopted after 1945 even though that legal system was ignored in practice by the USA, Britain and France and so on, nonetheless he is threatening to throw the entire system into the dustbin,” he concluded.
