Senior officials in Britain’s main opposition Labour Party have dismissed rumors suggesting party leader Jeremy Corbyn is standing down due to his age, saying he is fit to continue with leadership roles.

A Labour spokeswoman said on Tuesday that a report a day earlier in The Evening Standard suggesting that Corbyn had been pondering resignation from Labour leadership was completely false.

“It’s complete and utter nonsense,” said the spokeswoman, adding, “The fact that it’s been put in the diary section (of the Standard) probably reflects its shoddy sourcing.”

The article in The Standard had cited sources in the Labour as saying that Corbyn is becoming “tired and fed up” in the role, and is “ready to step down” as leader of the party as he nears his 70th birthday in May.

The source, believed to be a member of Corbyn shadow cabinet, said that people close to Corbyn are of the view he would like to hand over his socialist project.

“Corbyn is ready to step down. He wants to step down ... He’s tired and fed up,” the source had said in the interview.

Corbyn, a highly popular figure among the Labour grassroots and viewed as a genuine socialist, has been opposed both within the Labour ranks and outside the party due to his special attitudes on social welfare and foreign policy. A main issue with his in the political circles in Britain is his advocacy for the Palestinian cause and his opposition to the Israeli regime. The pro-Israeli newspapers and politicians have repetedly attempted to unseat Corbyn by accusing him of anti-Semitism, something he vehemently denies.

Another source in the Labour also denied rumors about Corbyn’s resignation, saying it was as if someone has had a bad dream.

“Somebody has been eating too much cheese, or something harder. His diary is packed full. He does a lot more late nights than early mornings: meetings, engagements, receptions,” said the source.
