Thousands took to the streets of France in a day of strikes and nationwide protests organised by trade unions in opposition to President Emmanuel Macron's economic policies on Tuesday.
Some of the demonstrators wore yellow vests -- the high-visibility uniform of the protest movement that has shaken Macron's presidency and saw renewed violence in Paris over the weekend.
The movement prompted him to launch a "Great Debate", and protesters demanded "an increase in wages, pensions and welfare, gender equality and a real right to education and training.”
According to the independent body Occurrence which counts participation at protests, 17,500 march in Paris, many from trade unions the CGT, the CFDT and Force Ouvriere.
More than 130 protests were planned nationwide.
