US has no respect for international law: Analyst

The United States has no respect for international law, says an analyst, adding that its sanctions against Iran are tantamount to economic warfare.

“As a firm believer in the necessary application of law and due process of law, I would agree that it is an appropriate move to take legal measures. However, unfortunately our world is not functioning in line with due process of law and the United States effectively can get away with whatever it wants,” Ken O'Keefe, a peace activist and former US Marine, told Press TV in an interview on Monday.

The comments came after President Hassan Rouhani said Iran will sue US officials behind draconian sanctions on the country in Iranian courts before taking the case to international courts of justice.

“The United States is continuing to act as a rogue nation with no respect for international law. I appreciate President Rouhani’s application of the law but of course let’s be realistic, it is not going to go anywhere right now,” he added.

US President Donald Trump withdrew Washington in May 2018 from a landmark nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), reached between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries in 2015, and decided to re-impose unilateral sanctions against Tehran.

Iran's litigation against the US has already succeeded in international tribunals. Last October, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered the US to exempt exports of humanitarian and civil aviation supplies to Iran.
