Labour will force confidence motion if May's deal fails again: Corbyn

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn warns that his party would force a confidence vote in the government of Prime Minister Theresa May if she loses another vote on her Brexit deal.

On Tuesday, lawmakers in the House of Commons rejected May’s Brexit withdrawal deal, sending the country into chaos just 17 days before the planned departure date.

The prime minister also suffered a similar defeat in Parliament in January where her deal was rejected with a margin of 230 votes. However, her government won a vote of no confidence with 325 votes versus 306 later that month.

“We’ve had one confidence vote already,” Corbyn told Sky News on Wednesday.

“The government is apparently going to bring its proposals once again to parliament this week. I suspect they’ll be defeated again, the whole process they are doing is running down the clock.”

“I think at that point a confidence motion would be appropriate. At that point we should say there has to be a general election.”

The warning came after Parliament Thursday allowed the government to seek a delay to its withdrawal from the European Union beyond March 29.

Lawmakers in the House of Commons voted 412 to 202 for a motion tabled by the government which is aimed at requesting a one-off delay to Brexit negotiation period for three more months.

The motion reiterated that such a delay would have a high chance of approval in an EU summit on March 21 if the Commons agree on a withdrawal deal a day before that.
